Grand Valley Paw & Heat Safety

Mesa County sees 100ยฐF+ days from mid-June through early Sept. Slickrock and asphalt easily hit 145ยฐF โ€” enough to blister paw pads in 60 seconds.

  • 7-second test: press the back of your hand to the pavement. Can't hold it for 7 seconds? Too hot for paws.
  • Hike before 8 AM or after 7 PM Juneโ€“Sept. Kokopelli, Lunch Loops and the Monument have no shade or water.
  • Carry 1 L water per dog per hour. Collapsible bowl in every pack. River access at Connected Lakes & Riverfront Trail.
  • Cheatgrass foxtails peak Mayโ€“July โ€” check paws, ears and armpits after every desert walk.
  • Prairie rattlesnakes are active on Mt. Garfield & McInnis Canyons. Consider a rattlesnake avoidance clinic.
  • Never leave a dog in a parked car โ€” interior temps hit 120ยฐF in 10 minutes even at 80ยฐF outside.
