A short history of the Grand Valley
Where you just moved, in five chapters.
1882
Grand Junction founded
George Crawford laid out a town where the Gunnison meets the Colorado — then still called the Grand River, which is where the name comes from.
1890s
Water changes everything
The Grand Valley irrigation canals turned desert bench land into orchards. Palisade peaches trace straight back to those ditches.
1911
Rim Rock Drive begins
John Otto's one-man campaign created Colorado National Monument; CCC crews later blasted the rim road and its three tunnels.
Today
Orchards, trails and wine
Roughly 160,000 people across the valley, 25+ wineries in Palisade, and more singletrack within 30 minutes than most states have statewide.

The practical stuff — weather, water, altitude and where things actually are.
It is high desert, not the mountains
About 4,600 ft, under 10 inches of rain a year, and roughly 245 sunny days. Lip balm, a humidifier and a water bottle are standard issue.
Summer runs hot, winter runs gray
July hits triple digits; do outdoor work before 10 AM. January brings temperature inversions and valley fog — the Grand Mesa is often sunnier.
Addresses are a grid, and it works
Numbered streets run north-south, letter roads (F Rd, Patterson) run east-west. Once you learn that, you can find any address cold.
Irrigation water is its own bill
Many valley properties carry irrigation shares separate from city water, with a season that runs roughly April through October.
Plan around harvest
Peaches peak late July through August, wine grapes in September. Palisade traffic doubles on festival weekends — leave early.
Wildlife is a daily fact
Deer in the orchards, bears in the trash come fall, rattlesnakes on the trails in warm months. Secure bins and keep dogs leashed.
Everything is closer than you think
Fruita 12 minutes, Palisade 15, the Monument entrance 20, Grand Mesa an hour, Moab and Ouray under two.
