Mountain passes, season by season
Grand Mesa Scenic Byway (Hwy 65)
Snow-packed Nov–AprPlowed but rarely dry in winter. The climb from Mesa gains 5,000 ft — check the top, not the bottom, before heading up.
I-70 Glenwood Canyon
Rockfall & flash-flood closures Jul–SepCloses with little warning during storms. The detour is long, so check COtrip before Rifle, not after.
Douglas Pass (Hwy 139)
Ice & slides Nov–MarSteep switchbacks, no services and thin cell coverage. Fill the tank in Loma or Rangely.
McClure & Kebler Pass
Kebler closes with first heavy snowKebler is gravel and unmaintained in winter. McClure stays open but gets slick above Redstone.
Monarch Pass (US 50)
Traction law common Oct–MayThe east-side route to Denver. Watch the wind — high-profile vehicles get closed out first.
Local driving tips
Elevation changes everything
The valley floor sits at 4,500 ft and the Grand Mesa tops 10,000 ft. Expect a 20°F swing and afternoon thunderstorms up top in summer.
Traction law season
From September 1 to May 31 on I-70, you need snow tires, all-weather tires with 3/16" tread, or chains. Fines apply if you block the road without them.
Pack the car
Water, a blanket, snacks, a phone charger and a paper map. Cell service drops out on Douglas Pass, Glade Park and much of the Grand Mesa.
Watch for wildlife at dusk
Deer and elk cross Hwy 65, Monument Road and 141 at dawn and dusk. Slow down through the marked corridors — one animal usually means several.
