- Heat & hot rockDesert slickrock can exceed 140°F. If you can't hold your palm on it for five seconds, it's too hot for paws.
- WaterCarry at least one liter per dog. Most Redlands and Monument-area trails have no water at all.
- Wildlife & cheatgrassLeash up near rattlesnakes and deer, and check paws and ears for foxtails after every summer hike.
- Know the rulesDogs are not allowed on most Colorado National Monument trails — stick to paved overlooks or head to the Riverfront Trail instead.
