Grand Mesa Scenic Byway🍁 Highway 65

Grand Mesa Scenic Byway

  • 63 miles one way
  • 3–5 hours with stops
  • 4,700 ft β†’ 10,839 ft
  • Peak: Late September – early October

The headline aspen run in western Colorado. Highway 65 climbs from the Colorado River at Palisade onto the world's largest flat-top mountain, threading miles of gold aspen, 300 lakes, and 10,000-foot overlooks.

Step-by-step directions

  1. 1From Grand Junction take I-70 east to Exit 49 (Palisade) and follow CO-65 south through the orchards.
  2. 2Continue up Plateau Creek Canyon through Mesa and Powderhorn β€” the first aspen stands appear near mile 27.
  3. 3Climb the switchbacks to Mesa Lakes Lodge (9,800 ft) and pull off at the lake for reflections.
  4. 4Stop at the Grand Mesa Visitor Center at Cobbett Lake for trail and color reports.
  5. 5Turn west on Land's End Road (dirt, dry days only) for 12 miles to the Observatory rim overlook.

  2. 2Stop at Fruita Canyon View immediately after the second tunnel.
  3. 3Continue to Independence Monument Overlook β€” the classic 450-ft monolith view.
  4. 4Pull off at Grand View and Coke Ovens for canyon-wide color panoramas.
  5. 5Visit the Saddlehorn Visitor Center, then finish at Cold Shivers Point above No Thoroughfare Canyon.

  • 150-mile day loop from Grand Junction
  • Full day, 6–8 hours
  • 5,200 ft β†’ 10,007 ft
